About Renault Kwid

Renault Kwid is a small hatchback with a B1-segment car size and SUV-like styling. Its design is very modern and sporty. It has roof rails which gives it a muscular look. Kwid offers the best-in-class boot space and a fairly high 184mm ground clearance but it has a small fuel tank of only 28 liters. Kwid Colour options – Kwid is available in a total of 6 color options – White, Orange, Red, Bronze, Silver, and Turquoise.  Talking about some pros of the car, it has double barrel headlamps, LED DRLs, body cladding, stylish wheel covers, 14-inch wheels, a dual-tone exterior color that gives it a premium exterior look, and a good road presence. On the features list, it checks on power mirrors, all power windows, touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, day/night rearview mirror, and back camera.

There are some aspects the Kwid lacks. It doesn’t get an AMT option for the base and mid variants and the knob-style AMT shifter doesn’t offer control over gear selection. Kwid lacks adjustable headrests and a height-adjustable driver seat. The mileage of the Kwid is good but it scores below Maruti’s cars in this segment. Renault’s dealership and service network are not as wide and great as that of its competitors.

Kwid Petrol Engine Options and Price range

Now coming to the comparison of the patrol variants of the Renault Kwid, we will start the comparison by discussing the petrol engine options first. The Kwid petrol comes with two petrol engine options – a 0.8-liter normal petrol and a 1.0-liter normal petrol unit. The 0.8L Kwid engine offers better torque and power than the Maruti’s Alto 800 along with a comparable mileage figure. The Kwid’s 1.0L engine performance is on par with its rivals like the S-Presso and Alto K10. Its mileage is also good but it can’t match the mileage of Maruti’s 1.0L dualjet engine.

Not all 8 petrol variants of the Renault Kwid get these two engine options. Only the base and middle petrol variants (RXL, 1.0 RXL, RXL Opt, and 1.0 RXL Opt) of the car are offered with options of two engines. The other variants (1.0 RXT, 1.0 RXT AMT, Climber, and Climber AMT) only get the 1.0-liter normal petrol engine. The price range of the Kwid petrol variants is between Rs. 4.64 lakh – Rs. 5.99 lakhs (Ex-showroom).

Renault Kwid petrol base model

The base model of the Kwid petrol is RXL. It is available in both – 0.8L and 1.0L petrol engine options. The RXL only gets the option of a manual gearbox with both engines. The price of the Kwid RXL 0.8L petrol-manual variant is Rs. 4.64 lakh (Ex-showroom) and the RXL 1.0L petrol-manual costs Rs. 4.74 lakh (Ex-showroom). The price difference is only Rs. 10,000.

Features you get in the RXL variant

The Kwid RXL variant has a Tachometer, fixed headrests, LED DRLs, double-barrel headlamps, 14-inch steel wheels, digital instrument cluster, black door handles and side mirrors, remote central locking, body-colored bumpers, internally-adjustable side mirrors, MID. The RXL variant lacks some useful features like a music system, power windows, wheel covers, and a day/night center rear-view mirror.

The RXL Opt variant of the Kwid petrol

The RXL Opt variant carries the same 2 engine and transmission options. The price of the RXL Opt 0.8L petrol manual is Rs. 4.89 lakh (Ex-showroom) and the RXL Opt 1.0L petrol-manual variant costs Rs. 4.99 (Ex-showroom). The price difference is Rs. 10,000. Features wise the RXL Opt variant has more features than the RXL variant like it has a music system, Bluetooth, FM, Aux, and USB connectivity, Front power windows, Rear parcel tray, front speakers, wheel covers, and LED tail lamps. The missing features in the RXL Opt variant are body-colored side mirrors and a day/night center rear-view mirror.

RXL Vs RXL Opt variant

The price difference between the RXL and RXL Opt variants of the Kwid is around Rs. 24,000. The RXL Opt costs around Rs. 24,000 more than the RXL variant. We think that the RXL Opt is the right choice between the two as it offers more value with additional features like the music system, Bluetooth, FM, Aux, and USB connectivity, Front power windows, Rear parcel tray, front speakers, wheel covers, and LED tail lamps. Engine wise we suggest that you skip the 0.8L engine option and go for the 1.0L engine as it will give you a better driving experience in the city and on the highway for just a small extra amount of Rs.10,000.

The RXT variant of Kwid (Better than the RXL Opt variant)

The RXT variant is only available with the 1.0L petrol engine but it gets two transmission options – a manual and an AMT. The price of the RXT manual variant is Rs. 5.34 lakh (Ex-showroom) and the RXT automatic variant costs Rs. 5.79 lakh (Ex-showroom). The difference is Rs. 45,000. The RXT variant has more features than the RXL Opt variant like it has an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Rear powered windows, chrome on the grill, a back camera, and a day/night center rear-view mirror.

The RXT-manual variant costs Rs. 35,000 more than the RXL Opt 1.0 petrol-manual and we think the extra cost is justified because of the extra features it gets you. Due to carrying the must-have features, the RXT variant becomes more practical than the RXL Opt variant. From a value as well as ownership experience perspective the RXT variant is the most recommended version of the Kwid for tight-budget customers. Automatic transmission lovers can go for the RXT AMT variant, which costs Rs. 45,000 more than the RXT manual.

Renault

The Climber Variant (a top variant of the Renault Kwid)

The Climber variant is the top variant of the Renault Kwid petrol. The climber variant is only available with the 1.0L petrol engine option but like the RXT variant, it also gets two transmission options – a manual and an automatic transmission. The Climber variant has all the features that you get in the RXT variant plus it has an (optional) dual-tone exterior, white outside mirrors, leather steering wheel, headlamp, door cladding, dual-tone wheel covers, chrome inside door handles, and roof rails. Design-wise, the Climber variant looks the most attractive variant of the car. The price of the Climber manual variant is Rs. 5.54 lakh (Ex-showroom) and the automatic variant costs Rs. 5.99 lakh (Ex-showroom).

The Climber manual variant costs Rs. 20,000 more than the RXT manual variant. The extra cost is for the additional style elements it carries. If the looks of the car are your first priority and you don’t have a tight budget then you can go for the Climber variant otherwise the RXT variant has enough features to give you a fair driving and ownership experience.

Our Opinion

We advise that if you are buying the Renault Kwid petrol variant then you should completely skip the 0.8L engine and go for the 1.0 larger engine as it delivers more power and torque output for just a premium of Rs. 10,000. The price difference between the two engines is so negligible that it makes no sense to go for the smaller 0.8-liter unit.

The base edition of the Kwid’s 1.0L petrol manual is a little too basic for a satisfying ownership experience. Better value is provided by the RXL Opt variant, which will also greatly enhance the ownership experience. Thus, even customers on a tight budget should get the Kwid at least in its RXL Opt version.

Renault

The RXT variant also provides fantastic value and many must-have features, if you can stretch your budget then the RXT variant is our highly recommended variant. The pricier top-tier Climber variation mainly carries more style elements. If you want certain style elements and your budget is not tight then you can go for the Climber variant.
