In December 2022, Tata Motors surpassed Hyundai and became the second-best-selling automaker in India. Tata sold 1,214 units more than Hyundai in December 2022. Most of the Tata Motors sales are coming from Nexon and Punch. Tata Motors sold a total of 40,045 units in Dec 2022. Tata saw a YoY sales growth of 13 percent. In Dec 2021 Tata’s sales were 35,300 units. However, the MoM sales of Tata declined by 13 percent from 46,040 units sold in Nov 2022. Tata Motors currently holds 14.6 percent Indian car market share, which is more than the 13.9 percent held in the same month of the previous year.
Tata Nexon is the highest-selling car of Tata Motors. A total of 12,053 units of Nexon were sold in Dec 2022. Nexon YoY sales declined 7 percent compared to the sale of 12,899 units in Dec 2021. The MoM sales of Nexon also declined 24 percent compared to the sale of 15,871 units in Nov 2022. Tata Nexon is available in petrol, diesel, and electric powertrain. This variant of options and the trust of Tata made Nexon famous all over the country. The second best-seller car of Tata is the Punch. A total of 10,586 units of Punch were sold in December 2022. Punch saw a YoY growth of 32 percent compared to the sale of 8,008 units in Dec 2021. However, the MoM sales of Punch declined 13 percent compared to the sale of 12,131 units in Nov 2022. Tata will soon launch a CNG variant of Punch which will grow its sales for sure. The CNG variant of Punch called Punch iCNG was showcased at Auto Expo 2023.
The third most popular car of Tata is the Tiago with sales of 6,053 units in December 2022. Tata Tiago saw a YoY sales growth of 65 percent and an MoM sales growth of 19 percent. Next, we have the Tata Altroz with a sale of only 4,055 units in Dec 2022. Tata Altroz saw a YoY sales decline of 19 percent compared to the sale of 5,009 units in Dec 2021. The MoM sales of Altroz are also down 19 percent compared to the sale of 5,084 units in Nov 2022. Tata will soon launch a new variant of the Altroz called Altroz Racer. This new variant could help Tata in increasing the sales of Altroz. The Altroz Racer variant was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, it was in dual-tone color and had a sportier interior and exterior.
Below Altroz is the Tata Tigor in terms of sales numbers. A total of 3,669 units of Tigor were sold in Dec 2022. Tigor saw a great YoY growth of 84 percent compared to the sales of 1,994 units in Dec 2021. On the MoM basis, Tigor sales fell 15 percent compared to the sales of 4,301 units in Nov 2022.
Tata Harrier YoY sales are down 5 percent, a total of 2,128 units of Harrier are sold in Dec 2022 and 2,234 units were sold in Dec 2021. The MoM sales of Harrier remained even as Tata had sold 2,119 units of the Harrier in Nov 2022. In the end, the YoY sales of the Tata Safari barely grew by only 1 percent. Tata sold a total of 1,502 units of Safari in Dec 2022. In Dec 2021 1,481 units of Safari were sold. The MoM sales of Safari grew 5 percent as the company sold 1,437 units of safari in Nov 2022. Mahindra Scorpio and XUV700 both are great competitors of Tata Harrier and Safari in the mid-size SUV market.
