MG motors are very active in the electric car segment and are aiming to take an early lead in the entry-level electric car segment with its upcoming 2-Door electric car known as Air electric. This compact car will be based on the Wuling Air EV which MG recently showcased in Indonesia.
MG Air EV will look small on the roads with a length of around 2,900 mm long which makes it one of the smallest cars in the country.
The overall style and design of the Air EV will match MG’s Wuling Air EV design. Due to its boxy and tall body structure the cabin space of the car is good enough to travel comfortably. The Air EV is built upon MG’s latest Global Small EV platform which supports multiple body styles. The latest spy shots credit goes to Vishal Mevawala.
The looks of the car are modern and stylish. With a full-width light bar upfront that stretches to connect the rearview mirrors the MG Air EV looks futuristic from the front. The front of the car also has trapezoidal headlamps, rectangular fog lamps, and a body-colored bumper.
MG Air EV have two doors and they are large enough for the rear seat passengers to easily move in and out of the car. For rear seat passengers two vertically mounted windows are given in this car.
In India, the Air EV is likely to ride on alloy wheels. The back of the car is fairly plain with sleek tail lights.
MG Air EV will carry a battery pack of around 20kWh to 25kWh and the motor will produce a power output of 40 hp. MG will make a variety of adjustments to the Air EV to adapt it to Indian conditions.
After analyzing the different weather patterns and driving conditions in the nation, MG will improve the major systems of the EV like the battery heat management system and the air conditioning.
Air EV will have a range of about 150km and the charging socket will be hidden underneath the company’s logo.
Key components will be purchased from regional suppliers to cut the cost of the Car. For instance, Tata AutoComp will supply the battery pack. The latter has a contract covering the design, production, supply, and servicing of battery packs intended for electric vehicle (EV) use in India with Chinese battery producer Gotion.
The LFP cylindrical cells in the Air EV battery pack are similar to those in the Tata Nexon EV. Almost every EV in India is using LFP cells because they have already shown themselves to be valuable in Indian conditions.
The first MG Air electric vehicle will be produced in March 2023. This entry-level EV will probably cost approximately Rs 10 lakh in India.
The Air EV can be used by families that want a quick, small option in their garage. The main target of this car is technology-loving youngsters who like environment-friendly mobility options. Due to its compact size, MG Air EV will be perfect for people living in smaller cities. The company plans to hit an annual production target of 36,000 units.
MG Air will have attractive features like a big touchscreen and a wide variety of connectivity options. MG Motors will unveil this EV at the 2023 Auto Expo. This type of compact EV is very popular in China but will it be successful in India? it is yet to be seen. Tata Motors is also preparing to enter this segment with the new-gen Nano Electric.
