Maruti Suzuki is developing a wide range of technologies, including electric, hybrid electric, flex-fuel, CNG, biogas, and ethanol. By March 2023, the company decided to have all of its product lines fully compatible with E20 fuel regulations. At the Auto Expo 2023, Maruti showcased its first electric car concept along with other vehicles, the company also showcased the new Wagon R Flex-Fuel.
The prototype version of this car was first displayed in December 2022 at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) Technology Exhibition. The Flax-Fuel Wagon R can run on an ethanol-petrol blend of 20% (E20) and 85% (E85). Maruti created this technology with the help of local engineers and the support of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan.
To increase the engine’s compatibility with greater ethanol blends, the company has created new fuel systems technologies like a heated fuel rail for cold start assistance and an ethanol sensor for ethanol percentage detection (E20-E85). To assure the durability of the engine and the vehicle, the company has designed components such as the engine management system, updated fuel pumps, fuel injectors, and more.
